Is the league just picking guys up off the street to officiate games this year? The "ref" in Flin Flon on Friday night looked like he was attending his first hockey game.

you didn't need a new thread for this - there's a thread started every season on this topic, then another each January after the break and another come playoff season - Refs are like hockey players but there are fewer to choose from - Some are good, some need to get cut but when you only have 21 players and 6 of them suck - they still dress and get a bit of ice time - With Ref's they get the whole game and if their stomach turns on them at 7:15, they still ref, and if they hit a deer on the way to the rink they still ref and if they please 570 people in the rink who don't blog they still get the shaft from the 2 in the rink who don't like them and do blog. Just saying they are human - in 25 yrs of watching Hockey I can't say a ref ever "obviously" changed the outcome of a game - - Both teams get the same quality. Just saying they are human Just saying they are human Just saying they are human

Wouldn't a "human" official know that after he blows the whistle the play is over? Apparently the ref on Friday forgot that simple little rule. You must not be watching much hockey above the atom level over those 25 years if you've never seen a ref change the outcome of a game.

another game changing call. was at the game in melfort and boomgaarden hits hounds player. it was clearly knee on knee contact. the ref calls a five minute major for major blow to the head. hounds player goes down holding his leg. referees huddle and still call a five minute major blow to the head. I do agree there should be a penalty on the play. hounds player after some over acting is back on the ice the very next shift. I also think players can take acting lessons at the sports college, because he did an amazing job.
I watched the replay on video and clearly knee on knee, no head shot. there was a head shot on one of the mustang players knocking his helmet off, no call. this clearly was inexperience at its best, the 3 of them should be able to get it right. I guess if the melfort player would have laid on the ice and embellished the hit instead of skating to the players bench maybe they would have made a call.
yes its difficult but come on get it right or at least be consistent.

Some of the worst reffing ive seen happend in Melfort last night vs ND. Theissen was reffing and absolutly sewered Melfort into the loss after they were up 2-0. Very poor effort.

Hopefully we dont see him again, by far some of the worst reffing ive seen. He not only missed calls but made calls that were rediculous. Send him back to pre novice.

Javon Bexson was the single ref in Nipawin and did a great job - Wasn't a terribly difficult game to call but he did a geat job.

shmyr and hamm were terrible last night in Humboldt. the lack of non-calls had the potential for the game to get out of control. there were several missed calls where a player received a questionable hit/slash but nothing. its alright to miss a few calls or let them play but when it involves a players safety get your head in the game.

had the opportunity to take in the game at melfort last night. for the most part was a pretty good game and the officiating was pretty good as well. the game goes into overtime and don't know whether the referees felt the need to let the teams play or not but allowing a team to blatantly play with too many men is absurd. the refs decided not to give a penalty and the linesman fail to make the call as well. they had an extra player on the ice for close to 10 seconds. I don't care what part of the game that it is in make the call, no excuses.

I haven't seen flin flon play this year, my default team I cheer for from years back but they have taken 3 times more penalty mins then Melville this year and are leading the league by a mile. Is there any benefit to the way they take penalties by someone who has seen them live? Are they good penalties, are they scaring the living daylights out of opposing teams like slap shots Charleston chiefs?, are they doing this intentionally as a badge of honor?...imagine how good they could be if they didn't play half the game with 4 skaters

From what I've seen, they take a lot of crumby penalties. After the whistle, cross checking, hooks in the offensive zone. Really some bad penalties. However, they take some hard penalties, they play balls to the wall, so your bound to have a few go against you when you play that hard. The undisciplined penalties need to stop, they would be so much better without the 12 calls a game.

anyone at the bomber ice wolves game? was bexson losing control or just trying to make a point. I have noticed, whether a coincidence or not, but the home town team almost always gets the majority of the penalties. he does this in aaa and now have noticed in the junior games.

Melfort/weyburn game on 14-11-18 bexson and Schroeder were terrible. made calls that were questionable and obvious calls that were never called. No consistency in their play calling. they both need to be sat down and replay the game to show them what was missed. Both laughing/smiling after a coach was screaming at them. So unprofessional.

Boo hoo, redforlife. Granted I was not at the game last night but the same thing happened against FF earlier this year. Ref blows down the play and a second later puck goes in the net and he calls a good goal. In my opinion, these bad calls even out over the entire year.

Chris Shore's effort with the red stripes last night in Melville was nothing short of horrible. Anyone who does a job; and I believe SJHL referee is a paid position; should have his pay withheld for being totally incompetent. Shore, time and again, glossed over infractions by the Battlefords North Stars and ensured the Melville Millionaires parade to the penalty box never ended. The worst examples were an instance following a Mils' goal where a Battlefords player repeatedly cross-checked a Melville player, within 6-8 feet of the referee, only to have him call Melville for a bogus high-stick seconds later to go along with a tackle in the Stars' crease by a defender and another nonsense call on the Millionaires. NO, i'm not going to walk a mile in his shoes and pretend this kind of thing can happen in officiating where human error is often the culprit. It was clear Shore had an agenda and whether it was to screw the home team or help the visitors, it's basically six of one or half-dozen of the other. If that's the best we have in the SJHL, we're in a pretty sorry state. When a referee does his best to aid one team or hinder another, it needs to brought to the league's attention and that referee needs to be dealt with in some manner, whether he loses some games and consequently some cash or just gets a reprimand. At any rate, the job Shore did last night was inadequate at best and extremely biased, whether he's smart enough to know or not.

Well I guess that would make Shore a consistent official, if that counts for anything. I didn't see the game last night but it sure sounds like an encore of his performance last week when the Hawks were in town. Maybe he will be the new Sheldon Dean.

Have you taken time to send an email to the league. They may not listen but if you are reasonable they will at least hear you. I know this forum is open to any and all comments but this isn't the place to get any results to your concerns. The game is on tape and you could request they look. Be civil, and if you can make your point without sounding upset your team lost, it will at least be a vote for higher expactations.
Can't hurt.

I pounded at 26 one night with that guy(shore) I've only seen him blow like two calls in his career. He's a good guy, your just seeing the game through your teams colours.
Now you should be beaking him on his red hair, and his four foot stature!

The Penalty occurred with about 20 seconds left in overtime, but there was no whistle until the buzzer sounded, so it was technically at the end of the game.

Why are these guys deciding games!? Stars had a tripping penalty with 250 ish left in the 3rd...all other games had penalties called in OT!! I'm sure if our OT lasted longer we would have had one too. I do not see any reason to be calling penalties In overtime....especially tripping. Let them play and decide the winner.....U had 60 mins to show everyone you can blow your whistle.

On Oct 30 I believe it was. A friend and I drove for 1 hour to watch Melfort and FF play. That game was decided by a stupid call in OT. I was mad, all the way home. It wrecked a real good game. I will not drive that distance to watch an SJHL again. Another fan lost.

In Friday's game at Estevan referee Brent Vandermeulen completely missed a checking from behind that resulted to a concussion to Estevan defenseman Charles Manley. This is typical of Vandermeulen especially in games last year. This is especially true when he is the lone referee. The Bruins lost their captain the night before to a concession when he was hit in the head in the middle of the ice. Thus he did not play in Friday's game. I hope the coach compl;ains to the league as this Vandermeulen is not only incompetent but biased. Look back at the games played in the 2013-14 season and if the league does not see the evidence they are sticking their heads in the sand.
