Why is attendance down? I have a few thoughts. You may not agree but feel free to post yours. There are not as many skilled players in the league to come out and watch. It also seems that physical contact is being curtailed. People don't want to pay to see a shinny game. Add in that fighting is basically outlawed. I know it sounds barbaric but lets be honest fans will come out to see a good tilt.

Have to agree. I enjoy seeing a good hit or a good fight and that seems to be almost non existent these days. Too many muckers and grinders in this league, a lot of games are actually quite boring in my opinion.

I've been working on my friends to come out to more games, I have two now that come religiously to season and playoffs games. I think we as fans have a duty to bring more people out and show them what they are missing. To me it's a great place to sit, chat and have a couple drinks. Now that playoffs are right around the corner more and more people are finding their way to the rink

I walked into a novice dressing room and offered 2 free tickets to any parents that would use them. 11 parents looked at me and said thanks but we can't be there tonight. Yes it is short notice and yes it was a school night. But I think part of it is people are busy. I know this only represents a specific age group - young parents but it is one reason. I have also talked to many people who say watching a game is almost meaningless unless you know the players a bit. So they are saying they want to either be there 80% of the time to keep up to speed or step out completely. Out of towm kids who haven't become household names yet. This tells me teams need to get players into the community so people do know who they are. Perhaps your team does that, but I think ours could do a lot better in that area. I also think it takes about 4 to 6 games for people to feel like they are not just outsideers / spectators anymore - and are becoming fans, or friends, or even part of the team. I know if we can get friends to about that many games they start to come by themselves occasionally. Sadly it isn't just about hockey anymore - it is entertainment and if the game sucks your entertainment should still make up for it. Intermission shoot outs are getting old. People like to be thrilled between periods just like they want to be during the periods. With a $700,000 budget it has become a business, an entertainment business.

People like to be thrilled between periods just like they want to be during the periods. With a $700,000 budget it has become a business, an entertainment business. I agree that it is definitely an entertainment business now. Estevan has bought into this method far better than any other team. They do everything they can to keep people excited all the time. They have an "ice team" with wireless mics that run around the arena and give out prizes during the game like in the NHL. I've seen everything from t-shirt launchers and human sling-shot bowling during intermission, fireworks before certain games. I could go on and on. Gotta spend some money to make money. Weyburn also does alright in this aspect compared to other teams. They aren't as extreme as Estevan but they do have a decent light show before every home game. They've done it for quite a few years now. It was exciting for a while but they've done the same thing forever. Haven't really added to it or anything. Not that they have the money for it right now, anyways. The issue is you need to HAVE money to spend, in order to make money.. A lot of teams don't, so they can't improve the experience.

It is a sad state of affairs when hockey needs a side show.
So much brainstorming has taken place about what hockey "needs". More offense, more scoring, more referees, less hitting, less fighting. All those people who said hockey was too violent are the types that are constantly complaining about some aspect of society they think needs changing. Violence wasn't turning them away from the game, they weren't interested in it then and they aren't interested in it now.
Hockey just needs to go back to being hockey. I seldom see the type of intensity on the ice that used to be part of every single game. It just isn't there. Shows up in the odd rivalry game and sometimes in playoffs, but that's about it.
Maybe it is just my observation, but I go to the games and I don't see many fans in that 12-25 year old age group. The thing is, if you aren't drawing that demographic the problem is only going to get worse in the next 10 years. And a lot of that comes from the game having been sterilized, there is really very little you'll see watching a Junior A game rather than just going and watching your friends or family play AA minor hockey.
As somebody who just wants to watch hockey, I personally hate any entertainment type gimmicks that make the games longer. They would just as easily drive me away as they would draw people in.

Maybe lower ticket prices. But it probably is the refs in Nipawin anyway that's the problem every game they lose.Maybe follow the excitement of having a good hockey team that plays to win almost every night. Spread that word around town instead of negativity towards the refs. I for one am sick of hearing we would have won the other night if it wasn't for the reffing. My seats will remain empty til I see a different approach from the fans and organization in general

Actual this board has almost like the SJ hockey games, no excitement, not many attending, over referred, etc ...
There used to be a few colourful guys on here, said some stuff, got things going, some guys didn't like the comments, but it was exciting. At least a little emotion, now hardly nothing except for the few on ff case. So what happened to these guys, admin booted them off ...
In my younger days, went to a hockey game, not very often I was home until 10:15 or so. Now the games, players just going through motion, no emotion or excitement in the rink, and the games that I do attend, most time back in my chair at 9:35, I an thinking what's up with this...
Another part of the game excitement that has been lost is the problem with new rinks. groups of fans would sit in there certain sections (new seating plans, these guys are not together any more, become like a old folks home), get on the players and referees witch they also heard. Now with the high glass, sound proofing, players and referee don't hear the fans, fans have lost the sound of the game also ...
We need to get back to the old game, every time you change one aspect of the game, something else changes to compensate for the change, too many changes ...
For me, many nights I save some $ and watch a game on TV or some other show and still home by 9:35 ...

Hey slasher. You should stay up late and watch the infomercials. I think you can order those "zoomie" glasses on there. If you don't know what they are, Google it. You sound like the biggest idiot fan nipawin has(other than pouty pants hawkeyplayer who deactivated his account), you might as well look like it too.
They actually might help you see the ref's aren't your teams problem so that's a bonus.

the great1 fulfills ipeecoy's dream of rude offensive comments to bring entertainment back to the forum!
Actually I would say the 2 old ladies who sit in sectoin T in Melfort are probably the worst in the SJ. Just they don't have enough lung left to be heard by anyone other than those 5 feet from them. But at least they like their Mustangs even if the players will never hear them cheer!!!!!

Ah don't worry about section T during the season someguy, there will be plenty of noise once playoffs come. Maybe you should skip on by and watch a hockey team with actual talent, that doesn't blame the officiating when they lose, oh wait, that rarely happens

Insulting someone's looks is a sign of your thin skin and shows no evidence of character or strength. You are comparing apples to oranges. Besides it was more of a joke for Ipeecoy's pleasure than a lament for Slasher's defence. Lament - look it up the meaning of that one. The section T comment was not provoked by Melfort's winning record - OH ya so far they are only 3-2 with Nipawin. Every team deserves something to cheer about once in a lifetime. Glad you have something to be proud of.

I simply stated he should look the part he plays. Thereby inferring he doesn't look like an idiot already. You'd think for someone who can use "lament" in a sentence you'd have figure that out.

taking things to a little lighter side of the forum. No name calling, no troll accusations, no doom or gloom - this is proof the whole SJHL is a conspiracy league run by aliens. IMO IMO IMO! of course.!!! 1020 fans in Meville Monday and 1020 in Melfort Monday. How co - incidental and wierd. Wonder if L4D has an explanation for this, maybe he remembers in the 72 playoffs it happening before!!! L4D can you verify??? Any history? If so we know you are part of the Hockey - Illuminati
Often wondered how the Mustangs came up with an attendance number at their last home game since no one was taking tickets, Convenient to get the largest crowd of the year on the record book when no one was counting.
Phantom assists, phantom ticket takers, aliens and swat teams attending playoff games. THE SJ RULES Just hope the CBC only has scores to talk about Thursday

When you have an electronic ticket machine, it prints them off and counts them for you. They scan the barcode on you way through the door. I was told that Bayer Crop Science bought 100 or so tickets, so that might skew a bit if not all of them came through the door.

A little clarification here....Slasher is a women I believe, the bombers were in the WHL in 1972, same year as home boy Bobby Clarke saved the free world with a hockey stick to an ankle, and i know nothing about attendance, I would have to attend to do that. I do abide though....as in the dude abides L4D

TheGreat1 said - "They scan the barcode on you way through the door." I said, "no one was taking tickets" Word from L4D - "Clarification" No one ripped tickets no one took tickets no one counted tickets no one sold tickets no one scanned tickets no one collected tickets no one stood in the ticket booth no one stood by the door no one turned the light on in the ticket booth unless they were scanning barcodes on the debit cards in your wallet the number was ficticious, but they set the 2014 2015 record just in case they want to use that in the future for anything valuable.

False, I clearly remember the usual two standing by the door counting people as they came in. Would the numbers be skewed a bit, of course, But the number didn't come out of thin air. I have been to enough games at the palace, when you hear the attendance being announced for 28 games a year, you kind of calibrate yourself. Their was definitely 1650+ in the Palace that night.

Well they took mine. Are u you sure you didn't just show up for the 3rd period like the rest of those who don't wish to pay. Are u actually suggesting the team just let everyone through the door for free? Common man!

I havent run any numbers from previous years or the regular season, but i know for fact that attendance is up for the playoffs in Melville, Weyburn and Melfort. Notre Dame is always going to be low. The game in Nipawin is abit puzzling at just over 600. The 2 games in Melville were both over 1000, Weyburn had 1300 for their first game of this series. Whichever teams move on to the next round, you would think numbers for attendance will only go up. I really dont think it is all doom and gloom for the league.

And that's whyvi an rooting for nipaein to beat melville, could you imagine a Melfort nipawin series? Both rinks would be to the rafters with people! As a Melfort fan I know nipawin could whip us but atleast it would be exciting!

The night that sponsors paid for the gate. It was done like this. But I will admit with that many people coming through some could have been missed. They had people at the doors with clickers. They tried to count the people going through. Did they get it perfect, I doubt it. Did people come in and out at the same time and new people slip by, probably. But to say no one counted a single person going in is a crock of . There were three local establishments that sponsored the game so it wasn't free per say. Say what you want about attendance. Everyone knows in the regular season they take the season tickets, add walk up and then add about 100 - 150 for workers and team personnel (League thing). If you look at video from around the league some nights you can count the people and it sure don't match the attendance figures. For the Mustang playoff attendance each ticket is run through a cash register. Each adult, student, senior and child ticket is punched in. Not sure if they are adding the traditional league bump to the amount. So there you are, take it for what you want to believe. :-)
