So Joe O'Brien get the nod as the Sherwood Division nominee as Top Goaltender for the 2014-15 SJHL Season. I would like to bring to your attention one other goaltender that has a better goals against average, save percentage, more win and more shut outs. These stats are as of this morning.
Richard Palmer G.A.A. 1.75 1st SAV% .933 2nd Wins 28 1st Shut Outs 5 2nd
Joe O'Brien G.A.A. 2.46 7th SAV% .927 4th Wins 23 4th Shut Outs 2 14th
Richard Palmer has the better stats yet does not get the nominee for the Sherwood Division. So who picks these nominees? Do they look at the stats?

I totally agree. I am even surprised with the defense man, as not only was Danys Chartrand overlooked with better stats, but so were others on different teams. It surprises me even further when you consider that they were a team that gave up more goals defensively than nipawin and melfort. This is where plus/minus would be a huge factor, as not all defense man get to play on power play and points seem to play a factor. I would bet Bell would not even be close in this factor, look at his whl stats, no wonder he was sent down. Who makes these decisions. Some other division nominees are also questionable. IMO

It's rediculous that Palmer isn't nominated. I Still think Weninger will win regardless though. I can't wrap my head around O'Brien or Burkart being nominated before him.

Don't take this as a Nipawin vs Melfort thing cause it isn't and a response toward such will prove you can't read - Palmer has good numbers. However I often see the goalie on a winning club getting the awards but their sucess is often shaded and improved by good defense. McAuley is an example - I think he is a great goalie but there are better defense groups around so he has poor numbers. Joyce never seems to look off ( on any games I saw him play) but his numbers could be better. It would be interesting to swap goalies every 6 weeks to see who shines steady and who floats with the men out front. I think Sav% is the best way to rank them but soft shots and icing also skew this stat. And as stated in many other threads the goal judges can make a Midget B goalie into an NCAA candidate.

Are the coaches still making selections or is the league putting together the short list and then having the coaches choose?

They pic the top player from each division. You would think it would make sense to nominate the top players for each position overal, not by division. Not sure on who selects the players for nomination.

The division idea is terrible. If a division doesn't have one of the top 3 players at a position, why should they get a nominee? Give the best players the credit they are due.

I can see the temptation to consider O'Brien more valuable to the Hawks than Palmer to the Mustangs, but the drop-off in goaltending when either team uses their backup appears to be about the same, so my choice would have been Palmer. I know Mike Stackhouse used to be really big on "goal support" that SJHL goalies get. I don't know how much of a say, if any, he gets in the nominees -- but the league may have had a hard time ignoring the Mustangs' goals-for and how badly they outshoot teams. Maybe the thinking was that Palmer's job was easier because the ice is more "tilted" in his team's favour when he's in net. But it's hard to ignore his stats, especially Palmer's save percentage. Every rink in the league is seeing the same thing when he's in net. Put another way, there are one or two teams scoring at about the level of the Mustangs, but they are the clear-cut best at keeping pucks out. Palmer has to be a big part of that -- again, especially when you compare his performance to the other goalies the 'Stangs used this year. Unless someone in the league has come up with a reliable formula to measure true goalie contributions to a team's success, Palmer would have been the right call here.

May not have helped Palmer that his overtime and shootout record is subpar and his backup had around 2.00 gaa and 4 shutouts in 16 games prior to degraves tough go Friday night.

Divisional awards is nice IMO. However the top goalie in the league would have to be one of the top goalies from a division. I do agree that the other 2 division winners may not be the 2nd abnd 3rd best in the league.
