As the season gets closer, there will be lots of new players in the league.... But what is considered a rookie? How many games can a player play the previous seasons that would allow him to still be a rookie?? Garrett Dunlop had 15 games of Junior A experience, before coming to the SJHL and won rookie of the year....... Some players joined teams last year at the trade deadline from AAA, and played a handful of games, are they rookies this year? others could of played 10 games in the playoffs for SJHL teams when there AAA team was done, are they rookies? I was told that a rookie is a first year player.... That leaves things wide open,as to what a first year player is defined as..

The SJHL must be a bit less stringent on what constitutes a rookie compared to the CJHL as it appears that due to his age Dunlop was automatically excluded from the CKJL rookie of the year and replaced by Eskra. It's possible they maintain the CJHL's requirement of 20 games in a single season but eliminate the requirement of being 18 or under on December 31 of the current season.
For the record, Dunlop shows 13 games prior to last season. 5 as a midget call-up with Nanaimo and 8 with Powell River before being cut early in the season.

So it's 20 regular season games? So the playoff games don't count? I saw that Dunlop had 13 games and then 2 in the playoffs in the BCHL.

This is the CJHL's criteria: "A CJHL rookie is defined as a player with fewer than 20 games in any Junior A or Major Junior league in previous seasons, and must be 18 or younger as of December 31st of the current season." I'd mis-read one source last night as saying it was 20 games in a season, but it appears cumulative.
Obviously the SJHL doesn't use that exact criteria as it would have made Dunlop ineligible (and it did at the CJHL level). No amount of searching has yielded a definition as to what the SJ uses as their criteria. I'm not saying the SJ uses 20 games in a season as their criteria, but it is possible they follow the CJHL on that portion but do not make it age based. Heck, knowing the SJHL I'd say it is totally conceivable that they make decisions on a case by case basis.
