Looking at games thru the league there seems to be an abnormally high amount of penalties for road teams and at the most inopportune times...do refs just not have a backbone and succumb to hecklers are is there favoritism?...or do teams all of a sudden have no discipline on the road

I think most referee's are Saskatoon Regina or Prince Albert based. Can't speak too much for the south but in past years you kinda had to live in Saskatoon and be buddy buddy with the powers that be to get the jobs. Since these 3 cities don't have SJHL teams i would say the answer to your thread subject is NO. As far as backbone - well?

In Melville, we dread getting hometown referees. When you're the lowest penalized team in the league and you see Sebastian and Salamon come on the ice, you know you're on the way to getting the short end of the stick. It never fails.

Re: home refs I can certainly see hometown guys overcompensating to ensure things are fair to the point of making them unfair. But you mentioned something interesting re 2 officials from Melville who actually officiate hometown games, is it common practice. IMO, and just an opinion there are some games where the sheer number of penalties seems crazy and pointless, totally ruins some games for the fans, this is not ballet as much as some people, I refuse to say fans cause I don't think they pay to watch the games, would like it to be. Let the boys play this league is supposed to be a developmental league where is the development in a constant parade to the penalty box, players should not be punished for good clean hard hits as I see far too often at the junior A level
