Twice this season there has been a female linesmen in Melfort, or shall I say lineswomen. The first was an exhibition game, the lady did a fine job I must say in terms of calling the rules, skating, keeping out of the play etc. One area of concern was how she'd handle a physical altercation. Nothing serious transpired so everything was fine.
Last home game here between Melfort and the Bombers was a whole different story. Two players got into a scrum, Yawitt for Melfort and Knaub. Now, to no fault of hers, this young lady was probably about 5'4'. So you can imagine how this looked, with Yawitt 6'1" and Knaub 6'5". The end result was Yawitt taking a dirty sucker punch above the eye splitting him wide open. This happend well after the scrum was over. Yawitt still has his gloves on with male linesman holding his arms. Knaub dropped a glove and totally suckered him.
I've heard there is a suspension coming, but I don't see anything on the league website......shocking..
I am all for gender equality, but are we going to put it above player safety, and officials safety?

I hear your story and understand your concern. I have the same concern after a female did a game in Nipawin. As with your story the lady in Nipawin had a "perfect" game with nothing to question but the similar thought crossed my mind. I also am for gender equality in sports and will say that a small male linesman should not be called upon to work the SJHL. If any gender is too small or weak to use the physicality necessary to work the game they should be given games in tamer leagues. If the females are physuically capable to do the job let them have the job. If a female or male is too week, find someone else. I think the league will learn the hard way - trying to be over- ender sensitive just to say they use females.
On a second point if any 2 players want to drop the gloves they should be 100% liable for any injury to themselves. Sucker punches could get the extra suspension but they should never, I mean never, go in with the hope a linesperson will jump in and save their neck if necessary. Linespeople do step in to reduce unjury but it shouldn't be expected or demanded. BTY if any player starts to bleed the linespeople have full choice to step in or step out, so players should know they don't have a guardian angle on the ice with them.

The league seems to have led itself away from most of the rough stuff anyway and half of the linesmen they have now can barely call an offside so why not give the ladies a chance.

From the games I've been to, female linesmen are pretty common down here in Weyburn/Estevan. I think it might be the same lady but we often have a female. Probably every 3 games or so. She breaks up fights just as good as any man even though she's smaller. The reff occasionally will help out if need be. The players seem to be pretty respectful of her and don't throw any late punches when she jumps in. I'm all for it. Who cares?

In Melfort there has been two different female linesman. The point is simply, if you can't do your job, should you be doing it? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know she didn't have a chance in hell of containing Knaub. If it was a player on you team who was injured, because the linesman couldn't properly do their job you'd be asking the same questions.

there are a handful of players who will not be contained by any male linesmen. You can't have 2 linesmen at every game that are bigger and stronger than the toughest guy on either team so you will almost always have a small / weak to big / tough issue. The main thing should be rule interpretation and procedure execution. Refs often step in for a male linesman. Someone else said and I agree that the rules have changed over the last 20 years to not require Mike Cvik's on the lines every night

Had a female doing the game in Melville on the weekend. Physical ability didn't become a factor. Though I did find it at least a little humorous that late in the game she called icing against the Mils; I think she was the only person in the rink who did not see the Mils player touch the puck about 10' over the red line. In typical female fashion she wasn't about to have anyone tell her she was wrong including the ref and the linesman she was working with, who both seemed to have observed the puck being touched.

We had one of these tonight. Wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen her enter the rink. ( hair was a bit long but not the "guy long" so that showed her up as a female. Awesome job.
