All-important first win goes to the Terriers
First blood goes to the Terriers of Portage.
Forward Eric Delong scored twice and Cody Pollon made 34 saves as the Terriers took Game 1 of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League final 3-2 at the St. James Civic Centre last night.
Game 2 is Tuesday night at the Portage Centennial Arena (7:30 p.m.) with the Terriers up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.
"Obviously the first win in any series is important -- especially in the finals," Delong said after his two-goal game. "We came out strong, we were taking the body and when we were doing that we were pretty successful. They picked it up as the game went along."
The Sher-Wood Division champion Terriers got on the board first when Delong buried a rebound on a two-on-one break past Guillaume Perusse at the 9:46 mark of the first period.
Portage rode that momentum through the majority of the opening 20 minutes, as the Saints appeared a little nervous in front of the 1,000 at the St. James rink.
Winnipeg, Addison division champs by way of Winkler, took three minors (two of them to MJHL leading scorer Matt Gingera) in the first period. The Terriers capitalized on Gingera's second infraction with 1:19 left in the first when Jeremy Dawes deflected a Mike Audino shot under Perusse for his fourth of the post-season.
Portage took a three-zip lead at the 3:33 mark of the second when Delong struck again, his quick snapshot on another odd-man rush finding room over Perusse's glove for his 10th of the playoffs.
If this were the regular season no one would blame the Saints if they folded up the tents and started working towards Tuesday's Game 2, but the city skaters took the deep hole as a wake-up call.
BEND BUT DON'T BREAK
The remainder of the period was all Saints; their high-octane offence finally generating chances as they tilted the ice in their favour and peppered Terriers net.
Gingera atoned for his early penalty trouble by chipping his 13th goal of the season past Pollon at the 10:07 mark of the second, finishing off a beautiful pass by defenceman Scott Macauley.
The netminder, filling in for MJHL goaltender of the year Gavin McHale (hurt), said his defence employed a bend but don't break attitude as Winnipeg fired 18 shots on the Portage goal.
"We stood on our heads (for the second period)," Pollon said. "They were peppering me for a while there and there were a couple that got away from me and our D-man jumped on it. Those guys are helping me out huge. I'm feeling fantastic out there."
Macauley scored with under five minutes left to make it close, but the Saints couldn't find the equalizer.
Perusse made 23 saves for the Saints.
The winner of the MJHL title, and the Turnbull Memorial Trophy hardware that accompanies it, advances to the ANAVET Cup, which starts April 18 in Saskatchewan.

For the second time in the past four years, the Portage Terriers are MJHL champions.
The Terriers blew open a 2-2 tie with three goals in the third period to defeat the Winnipeg Saints 5-2 in Game 5 of the best-of-seven Turnbull Trophy series. Portage wins the series four-games-to-one.
Like the in past two games, Portage was able to break a tie in the final minutes of the game.
Riley Nixdorf scored the eventual game-winning goal on the power play for the Terriers at 4:42 of the final period. Tyler Moore provided the insurance with 10 minutes remaining and Eric Delong capped off the win with an empty net goal that sent the Terriers bench into a frenzy.
Down 2-0 after the first period, the Saints battled back to tie the game. Scott Macaulay got the Saints first goal at 8:22 of the second period on the power play and Tyler Mistelbacher tied the game just 1:34 into the third period.
Mike Audino and Darren Miller scored for the Terriers in the first period to give them an early lead.
Gavin McHale made 38 saves to get his second win of the playoffs, while Jordan Dreger stopped 45 pucks in his first career MJHL playoff start.
Portage went two-for-nine on the power play, while the Saints were one-for-two.
Portage's Cody Pollon was named the MVP of the playoffs and the top goaltender. He had a 2.68 goals-against average and 9-4 record in 15 playoff games before giving way to McHale, who returned from injury in Game 4 of the MJHL final series.
Winnipeg's Matthew Gingera is the top scorer of the playoffs. He tallied 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points in 15 games.
The Terriers now move on to the ANAVET Cup, where they will take on the winner of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The Kindersley Klippers lead the Humboldt Broncos two-games-to-one in the best-of-seven SJHL final.
