Geographic location, if your turn it around and its a compelling argument, if you go to Yorkton in Jan you can catch a number of Jr A games in the area...but using Yorkton as an example, its probably a min of 3 flights 2 days to get there, could be -40, maybe have to ride a bus to a few locations....As a scout...it makes the BCHL pretty attractive, never mind the other factors mentioned in the article. And you hear it again! Tired of hearing how good the BCHL is to be honest. The only place the BCHL is better is at marketing. You can't say that doesn't attract scouts. Maybe the SJ doesn't have the big stars the BCHL does but it sure does have the depth. When Penticton came to Humbodlt in 2012, they had like what 17 players with scholarships? Sure a great team, but were 0-1 against the "SJHL"

Most scholarships are given out to the players before they even hit junior. Look at how many BC kids have their scholarship before playing in the league. This year most scouts were looking at the 97 and 98 age group in Sask that are playing midget and talking to them and seeing if they are interested in school in the US. With the WHL scholarship program most Sask kids look at this first as it covers more programs than you can get by going the NCAA route. If they are interested in the US they are encouraged to go to BC where scouts can keep an eye on them and see if they still want them after junior. It may not be right but it is what is happening with some kids from here

Here's a tip for college scouts - how do we develop players in the SJHL? We teach them to focus on winning (at the same time as skill development, community involvement, and educational development). I think those are the exact attributes you look for in new recruits.
