Yaremchuk took a slap shot to the face in La Ronge in game two of the season, not sure how long he's out. Warkantine got caught admiring a pass in Melville. Radio said it was way late, but I didn't see it. Not sure of timeline for return on either.

I didn't think the hit was super late but he never did appear to have possession of the puck (passed by him without being touched, or at most was deflected), though Filler did get suspended for a high hit. Kind of looked shoulder to shoulder at speed, and the way Warkentine was holding the arm would was indicative of either a broken collarbone or separated shoulder. It was a weird situation because he was down for a 5 seconds or so while the Mustangs had the puck, got up gingerly, slowly heading to the bench and then when the Mils had possession and were skating towards Melfort's zone he flopped to the ice. The Mils ended up scoring on that rush.

We'll keep the thread going for now, but if it gets back into this abomination of Melfort vs Nipawin board members BS or Melfort WCC rumour BS again, we'll lock it down.
Thank you

Mustangs announce Craig Leverton has joined the team on their Facebook page today. 53 points in 70 WHL games last season according to the release. Shouldn't hurt the lineup I don't think. I haven't seen him play, what's everyone's thoughts on him?

He's listed with Melfort and got released by the raiders. No other whl team picked him up and he chose not to go to any other jr. A teams out of province.

He's a 20 year old and teams can only carry three. My bet is he'll be the best player in the league.

The gap between the WHL and the SJ isn't that big, yea he should do very well, but best player when he was just average in the dub, I doubt it

The gap between the WHL and the SJ isn't that big, yea he should do very well, but best player when he was just average in the dub, I doubt it I'd bet there isn't a hand full of players in the sjhl that'd get 50+ points in the whl in a season. If you truly don't believe there's a big gap you need to go watch more games in a small whl rink close to the ice like in pa or he old crushed can. It's not even close in terms of speed and skill. 50+ point guy isn't an avg dub guy either.

With defensemen I don't typically notice a huge difference (actually they tend to disappoint me), but forwards typically double their major junior production. But I don't imagine there are many guys that drop down from major junior after putting up numbers like that.

I know both leagues quite well, and while I'm not knocking leverton, he played on a weak PA team so he got more ice time and especially pp time than he would have on pretty much any other team in the league. Time will tell won't it.

The gap between the WHL and the SJ isn't that big, yea he should do very well, but best player when he was just average in the dub, I doubt it I agree with you; the gap is not that big. I have seen a lot of players play junior A after 2/3 years of major junior experience and not be top 6 forwards or top 4 D on their junior A team. Spending that time playing major junior riding the pine or sitting in the stands does little for a players confidence and development. A friend of mine does lines in the dub and SJ. He told me that the playoff series between Melfort and Humboldt in 2014 was faster and more skilled than the Raider games he did that season. We agreed that a lot of players would switch leagues if they were 6'3" instead of 5'9"' or vise-versa.

Melfort didn't play humboldt in 2014. And I agree some whl guys come back and aren't anything specially. But the difference in top 6-9 forwards and top 4 is significant.

I guess time will tell how Warkentine and Leverton do this season. They are definitely more skilled than the 2 ex dub players they carried last season. BTW Humboldt eliminated the Stangs in 6 games during the 2014 playoffs.

Seen Leverton play today in Warman. Played on a line with Zary & Boutin. Looked good and will get better as he plays more. Definitely will improve the team.

It all depends on what attitude they come back with, if the feel jilted by the Dub or that they are better than the SJHL, you are better off not having them on your team, especially as 2o year old. They have nothing left to strive for, thus a lac luster effort night in night out and more often than not foster a bad attitude within the team.

It scares me with the forward talent and ex dub players. There is no doubt who their to line is (Minions) 2nd line was Yaremchuk, Warkentine, and Boutin. Now getting Leverton makes it for a lot of ego's to fight it out for minutes between 2nd line and 3rd line. Teal & Zary have been playing good hockey as well, hate to see him get shuffled out of the picture. I worried about the same thing last year and they proved me wrong and played for the team and not themselves and won a championship lets hope they can do it again. Palmer looks unreal right now and would have to think he got the scouts attention at the showcase.

more skill maybe but boomgarden brought leadership and shut down capabilities. leverton will help as he is a proven goal scorer, even if on a poor whl team. the stangs have not missed a beat with warkentine out of the line-up, I actually think they are better as he is a defensive liability. I will be surprised if he is back with all the concussions he has had. next one could be his last, that is the risk you take. bricker was no goal scorer but worked hard, I don't think he was known for being a goal scorer.

I'm not sure how Warkentine and Boomgaarden compare as far as leadership is concerned. As far as ability and on ice contribution, I would go with Warkentine. He works hard at both ends of the ice, skates well and makes smart plays. As for Boomer, he was a good leader and liked to use his size. However he made some scary decisions with the puck and struggled at times with defensive zone coverage against smaller skilled forwards. Bricker was a very good penalty killer and 2 way player but didn't get any pp opportunity so that hurt his numbers.

They dont need leadership ,honestly there is lots of quality players that are leaders on this team and they have shown that already on the ice . i do feel that it could collapse real quick if they start losing but time will tell ?

Stangs keep finding a way to come back in games. After tonight the Stangs will have played 10 games, 6 of these against Laronge (which is totally ridiculous scheduling) I will be curious how they stack up against Nipawin and Weyburn. That will be where we see if they are as strong as last year or not.
