sounds like coaching. all players will want to stay on the ice in that situatation and will only come off when the coach initiates the change. sounded like a pretty exciting game overall. best crowd of the tournament.

Few quick comments. I have been fortunate enough to take the games in live. Melfort is yet to play a complete game. IMO their best games of the year were game 5 against Nipawin, and 4 against ND, they were complete start to finish, so I expect nothing less today. They are a veteran team and they'll be ready.
V's are very fast, they skate and play like a WHL team and could likely beat some of the WHL teams out there. Every player can skate like Melfort's best players. Great goaltending as well for the V's. Having some NHL draft pic's helps too!
Portage is very similar in skating, but tougher. They banged the sh** out of V's and that is why they were successful. V's aren't used to that style of play. Portage goaltending is a potential weak spot.
Fort Mac is comparible to Nipawin, with less scoring power. Despite previous comments, the game was physical. They are greasy with lots of high hits and stick work behind the play.
Now for Melfort. Palmer has been outstanding! Minion line, only two guys are able to keep up with the play IMO which makes it tough to get things going. Melforts defence hasn't been that solid compared to the entire season. I believe Mayan will break out today, he has a nack for scoring big goals and they don't get bigger than today. One thing about this team is they compete. They've been in every game. The round robin / record means squat right now. Win and you are in!!

I can't believe Palmer, i have been on the fence about this guy all year. But when a goalie has a 12-0-2 record in the playoffs and comes out and plays a full unreal 60 minutes or more each game this tourney, you have to give him credit

I can't figure out why everyone thinks the weakness on Portage is goaltending. That has been the case all year and I can't say I disagree. Yet his GAA and Save percentage in the regular season was 2.13 and .911. In the playoffs 1.24 and .946. At the WCC it is 2.35 and .913. He was 31-3 in the regular season, 11-0 in the playoffs and lost the 1 at the WCC. All he does is win. So if he is the weakness, is Portage just that much better than everyone else with the forwards and D that they win in spite of him? Palmer goes undefeated and he is a hero. Laforest does the same and he is the weakness. I just don't get it.
Go Terriers Go and Go Melfort. Kick the sh@T out of the arrogant AJ today. We're so much better my a$$. Would like to see Melfort here next week. Let's have some beers. And Anavet would have been way way better than this garbage. I could have used a weekend at the Melfort Inn (do they still have table top Pacman by the pool?) and some Venice House Pizza.

Portage have an unreal group of dmen, and a lot of his shots come from the outside. As soon as Melfort forced him to move they could score. He's big, but can't cover the bottom of the net. This of course is IMO. I have doubted Palmer all year, trust me I have. But he's been unbelievable in this tourny. Hard to believe he wasn't goaltender of the tourny. He got player of the game twice. Secondly, the Melfort Inn is no more. She got bulldozed this winter.

With melforts win.. Both AJHL teams are done... Congrats to Melfort on moving on to tomorrow's final. When comparing leagues people have to remember players from BCHL,AJHL,SJHL,MJHL all come from the same leagues: wether it's junior b from somewhere, Aaa or aa midget, highschool hockey there are players from the same aaa, junior b teams etc in different leagues. They said on the news that Melfort is going to the RBC.. Don't they have to win tomorrow?? I thought the winner of tonight's game vs portage and pentiction is guaranteed a RBC berth? And then tomorrow the loser of tonight's game from Pentiction and portage play Melfort and I thought the winner of that game will go on to the RBC?

Okay so now with three tournaments under this format the results have been this so far: 2013: BCHL and AJHL berths in RBC 2014: SJHL and MJHL berths in RBC 2015: MJHL, BCHL and SJHL berths in RBC
If this tournament was formed: 1) to cater the BCHL and AJHL: Not working 2) to make money for the host and CJHL: Not working 3) to get fans more interested in their Jr. hockey team: not working 4) to piss everybody off including but not limited to fans, players, and parents: Working

Melfort would need to win tomorrow to get into the RBC in a normal year. Portage is the host team of the RBC, so they get in automatically. So this year, 3 teams will get in. Melfort and Penticton can finish no lower than third so they both get in.
And tonight is the final. Tomorrow is the 2nd place game.

very uncharacteristic of the Mustangs to give up so many late game goals. 6 goals against in 5 games with less than 2 minutes left - 4 of them with less tan 20 seconds left. So very un-normal of them. I only point this out so I can comment I wish they would have given up a few of those against Nipawin to avoid a few OT games. I understamnd they beat Nipawin so this isn't about that - but Melfort didn't usually play a full 60 minutes against the Hawks, nor did the Hawks play 60 minutes against Melfort. Hopefully this WCC has ben educational enough to push them to the next level and compete well in the RBC. I wonder how things will go Sunday - play to win or play to be safe, the playoff rounds are supposed to mean something but at this years WCC the playoff round is like a preseason to the RBC, meaningless opprtunity to get to know your competition before the games that count. The west will send 3 of 5 to the RBC and the other 2 combined will send 2 of 8.

At least Portage has won their way through to get to the RBC, they are a very good team and the best two teams (likely in the country) were in the final at WCC. I would have been rattled with the tourny set up had Fort Mac got by Melfort yesterday for a free pass. They got swept first round of their playoff series and had they back doored their way to RBC by hosting a tournament that shouldn't exist, that would've been sad. Now today's game. I would highly suspect we will see Melforts healthy scratches playing. Melfort has key injuries and having played 5 games in 7 days guys need a rest. As many as five guys who haven't played in 6-8 weeks will play IMO. Also of note by finishing as West 2, Melfort has far better schedule in Portage, West1 starts Saturday with every single round robin game in the afternoon (can't believe that can happen). West2 gets an extra day starting Sunday, with only one afternoon game in the round robin.

I am from Portage and technically Portage has not won their way in to the RBC. The team that loses today sneaks in the back door. Any other year, the loser in today's game would be done. With that said though, I don't think either Melfort or Portage cares too much if they win today. When they play again at the RBC, that's the one they will care about.

I suppose technically yes, having won the league to get to WCC vs. not getting swept first round and hosting WCC, then getting the 3rd seat is a lot more back door in my opinion then what Portage or Melfort has done. Since end of Regular season Fort mac has won 3 games, and just about made it to RBC. Portage and Melfort have won 15 and 14 respectively. I have a lot more respect for these two teams going, then Fort Mac.

Its hard to tell if Melfort will want to have the bragging rights of saying "We earned our way to the RBC" or if they are conserving their allstars so nobody gets hurt.

Well dressing 17 players and having your #1 D man play centre should say something about how little Melfort cared about this win. Just another reason this tourament format is terrible.

Terriers played 5 players whose playoffs games in the MJ totalled 7 between them all. So they were in the same boat. Captain and top DMAN as well as a top scorer sat in the stands. There's excitement and drama for you....what a waste of a game.
Melfort fans, after seeing/hearing about the WCC, are you more optimistic about their chances to win the RBC, no change or less optimistic. As a Terrier fan, I am more optimistic for their chances. They handled themselves very well in a tournament with a tough field. But these tourneys are a crap shoot. RBC may be much of the same or a complete turnaround. You never know. A couple of bad games or one in the playoff round and you are toast!

Just curious as to how these host teams always lose money in these tournaments. What are the expenses? I see 10 games at $25 a ticket. Could we say 500 people at Fort Mac last year so $12,500 per game = $125,000. Other than ice time what costs money? Do the host have to pay some hotel costs for the visiting teams?
Do they need to pay officials?
Who buys the food?
But then you add a banquet on to the weekend and make money there plus loads of sponsorship?
What am I missing? Can they really lose money at this?

The host pays for travel, hotels, and food for all the teams during the entire week. On top of that, there is usually costs involved with booking ice (sounds like the City of Estevan has donated a lot), general admin costs with set up and planning, arean upgrades (just cosmetic mostly), etc. It all adds up.

I believe the host team covers the bulk of the cost for each team to attend the WCC. So food, hotel, travel. I talked to a board member a while back and they said the tournament still costs the teams attending a bunch of money for wages and billets and sticks, etc. What I don't get is if these tournaments are losing money why continue on? No question the Mustangs would have had a minimum of two sold out home games two years in a row against Portage in the old Anavet Cup system. That makes the team a bunch of money instead of spending to attend the WCC and than the tournament hosts also losing money. It makes no sense why this format is being continued. If the fans don't support the WCC it will never be profitable. End of story.

I never did hear how Fort Mcmurray made out with the WCC last year, but when the Mils and Terriers did their due diligence on hosting the tournament the past financials in Nanaimo and Dauphin convinced them to pull their bids. It would be one thing if the tournament was a sure thing to make money after all the hard work that goes into it, but the uncertainty and the possibility of running a deficit is enough to scare teams away. Realistically I don't think this format has a bright future, half of the AJHL and BCHL might be able to pull it off without a significant risk to their finances but I'm not sure the same goes for the SJHL and MJHL. Then again that kind of fits the wide spread opinion that the WCC was made to send more teams from Alberta and BC on to the RBC.

Exactly but there are a bunch of cowards that spearheaded this stupid tourney and now they are too sheepish to eliminate it( this is all speculation) Last year was a great example of how dumb this tourney was because the outcome for the RBC would have been exactly the same!!! Penticton would have stomped the AJHL rep and qualified and even if portage beat Melfort in the anavet the mustangs would have still qualified. Now you have FIVE clubs that lost cash instead of FOUR that would have made REAL good coin!

Three years ago I heard some insider info that Melfort was going to bid for the WCC, the only reason they didn't even submit one was because Estevan bid as well, which makes sense with the new arena and such. I think Melfort being as they earned their way to the tourney could make really good cash hosting, Melfort is electric all over town about winning back to back.
I also heard a couple years back from that very same source that the rbc cup doesn't make you money no matter how well you do it or how well the attendance is. Hockey Canada takes all the revenues and you'll be lucky to be up a couple thousand dollars. Heard that when humboltd hosted in 2012 that they made enough money to buy a new washer and dryer

I think Melfort being as they earned their way to the tourney could make really good cash hosting, Melfort is electric all over town about winning back to back. It is a shame the Mustangs passed on the idea just because Estevan bid as well, considering the success they've had the last two years. It would have been a dynamite combination especially because Flin Flon would have been in as well this year with the way things turned out, but how do you know? This thought has kind of lingered in my mind a bit the last few days and the more I think about it not only does this format fail to financially reward teams that win their league, it is some ways is detrimental to the host team. I'll preface by saying BC might be a little bit of an exception to this because there are a few teams whose success is largely tied to their bank roll. Teams like Penticton, Nanaimo, Vernon, West Kelowna, and now likely Wenatchee.....all regular contenders and they are usually the types to bid on the WCC and RBC. Anyway, the point I want to make is that because this tournament is going to be shared on a 4 year cycle there are teams that are just going to grasp at straws when it comes to their league's turn to host. Bidding on the tournament two years out is a crapshoot at best, you have no idea how good the team is going to be. I thought even Estevan was a stretch to be in a position to compete in the WCC. Granted, you'd have two years to build, but at what cost? I looked back at the past three hosts, Nanaimo was mediocre in the year following the WCC and rebounded quick (thanks to $, IMO), Dauphin has placed 9th out of 11 the last two years, Fort Mcmurray placed 14 out of 16 teams this year. It is clearly just an assumption on my part but with 9 graduates, likely giving up a few to futures deals, and no proven returning goalie I don't see Estevan making any noise next year. I guess the trend seems to indicate that teams are stuck selling the future to try and patch a team together just to be competitive as the hosts, and the effects may last several seasons or more. Estevan does not appear to be showing well right now, and it is scary to think what the result would have been if either the Mils or Terriers had kept their bid in and been chosen as hosts. Both bottom of the barrel teams, what would the cost have been to not totally embarrass the league at the WCC? Obviously withdrawing their bids was a smart choice. Having to sell a year or two of success might be worth it if you have a chance at a championship and make a healthy profit, but one of those is a gamble and the other simply isn't going to happen. I for one hope the Mils never even consider hosting in the future.

Here's how lucrative (not) this tourny is. Manitoba is set to host next down the line and EVERY team in the league has declined the opportunity. A best of Seven between Melfort and Portage right now would not only be much more exciting but also rewarding for both squads. Squash the WCC and bring back the Anavet. As teams keep losing money every year I am sure that is what will happen eventually.
