I can’t see it changing anything but it will probably make things better for the SJ there are only so many spots in the BC league and if they’re able to import players from around the world, Canadian players will need places to play. And the essay will be a landing spot for them. It will be interesting to see how many players in Saskatchewan actually play in the BC league. I don’t think the SJ has anything to worry about.

Yeah I don't think it is going to change as much as people might think. This is just going to open the door for BC teams to have more Americans and now European Players. There aren't going to be much for roster spots. Also if a Canadian player goes there and say they get cut...they won't have anywhere else to play in Canada because I think they will be disqualified from playing in any other Junior League. Seems like high risk, high reward from a players perspective if you ask me. |

Very different. They don’t have to follow hockey Canada rules now. So they can get underage players from out of province, they can get players from all around the world. They can sign players from where ever with no compensation. So if a player is on an sjhl roster and a bchl wants him they can sign him right off the roster and give no compensation in return.

Under age kids have been manipulating the rules already stars, so let them go. In the end the good ones stay and the marginal ones get released. IMO if you play in that league you should be banned for the remainder of the year from joining a hockey canada team. That would second guess a few guys who "think" they are studs. |

I understand how being outside the cjhl removes them from the rules but how did they operate in 22-23? We’re they not an outlaw league this season past? |

Honestly ever since these "advisers" came into bantam, midget, then junior, all they have accomplished is screwing up more kids careers than helping. Play where you can demand attention at 16/17, and if the SJ is an inferior league we should be the staple for young kids coming in. Instead they dip their toes in too deep, get tossed around teams for their career, and most end up where they should have started. If your too good for the SJ my guess is you will move up, and yes that is the BCHL....Penticton would walk away with the centennial if they were in it, along with 1/2 or more of the other bchl teams. I blame parents, they set standards too high and think their johnny needs to play at a higher level to succeed. Hmmm wonder if southgate, kotai(former bchler), Doell and Bell who will get a CIS are thinking they should have played in the BCHL? Only my rant, agree or not, its only my opinion. |

They are going to be having a sanctioned hockey Canada Junior A league in BC as well. I doubt they'll be able to get up and running for next season though. Probably looking at 24/25. However, after the first year of this version of the BCHL, wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of franchises leave the league. |

Follow the money, it’s the golden rule, he who has the gold rules. Average attendance at a Penticton Vees game is over 3000. They have 30 regular season home games. That’s 90,000 tix at an average of $15 a ticket for $1,350,000 regular season income, plus playoffs advertising and sponsors. I would expect teams with similar attendance would also be successful.

I think there needs to be a mindset shift as to what "too good for the SJHL" looks like and where it ought to take a player. All things considered, the WHL is a very different path but historically people have been somewhat brainwashed into the thought line that if you're good enough for the WHL, you'd best be playing in the WHL. I don't think it is wrong to say that players like Carsten Kayter or Riley Ashe are "too good for the SJHL", but they are here now utilizing it as a stepping stone. A key point with the WHL path that doesn't get talked about enough is you've got a limited time frame to make use of your education fund. It's not something I really understood until recently. Players essentially have one season to test the water with pro hockey. After that you either stick with pro hockey and lose your scholarship fund or play U-Sports and pursue your education. I won't say that the path from U-Sports to the NHL is totally impossible, but you don't see it happen anywhere near as often as the NCAA to NHL. There's no doubt that if you're an elite player and you're all in on making the NHL, then the WHL is an obvious choice. And much the same, if you're just interested in an education then the WHL is also a much better choice if you're good enough to stick there for 3 or 4 season as just being on a roster past January 10 entitles a player to 1 year of paid education. The spot where the NCAA path has a leg up on the WHL is those players that want to take a legit shot at pro hockey while still having an education to fall back on. The level of hockey is a viable and proven springboard to the NHL, and I would say their training and resources far exceed what U-Sports players have access to. A player that goes the NCAA route at 18 could have a degree at 22 or 23 and still be in their prime development years to have a realistic shot at a pro career. |

I agree, that the parents have stars in their eyes. Over the years some parents have moved to BC so their under age kids can play there. Some succeed, a lot end up back home. Just shake my head! Before I get into my own rant, all I can say is let BC leave Hockey Canada! Junior hockey will survive without them. |

These players go to another “junior a” league with no compensation. This is bad enough to happen before the start of the season just wait until a team’s leading scorer or number 1 goalie leaves January 15 with no compensation.

I just look at it as it is what it is. They want to go there risking their chance of not making any other team this year. Yeah compensation would be nice but it just leaves a spot open for somebody who could be better. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. And scouts are gonna find you no matter where you play.

When a BC rogue league goaltender gets hurt on January 14 and there’s a phone call With a financial reward attached that’s not leaving room for another player. That’s leaving a team stranded and greatly jeopardized. This could get very bad for the rest of Canada unless somebody steps in with some legal consequences

Hockey Canada will exclude players from unsanctioned leagues for under 18 international competition and the CHL. So the players get punished. If that logic works then a flood of players who were going to play in BC will now be available as the cut off date is Saturday. But, I’m not gonna hold my breath waiting for a mass exodus outta bc.
